Folks from far and wide have flocked to Ogunquit for the better part of a century for the outstanding, Broadway-caliber theater that goes down every summer at the Ogunquit Playhouse.
The Playhouse, launched back in 1933 during the “Little Theatre Movement” and wowing audiences with every season since, is one of Ogunquit’s iconic historic fixtures—just like our very own Colonial Inn, built more than 125 years ago!
And we’ve got some great news for our Colonial Inn guests this autumn: In line with recent years, the Playhouse’s season (its 84th) has been extended into November. And not only that, but staying with us at our beautifully renovated hotel gets you a 20% discount when we book your tickets for you!
Homesteader Hijinks & Rollicking Rock-n-Roll
You’ve got a pair of fabulous shows at your disposal this fall at the Ogunquit Playhouse. First up’s the lively, high-flying, and toe-tapping Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (September 7 through October 1), a comedic saga of matrimonial mayhem set in the hardscrabble Oregon Territory of the mid-19th century. This always-popular musical, known for numbers like “Wonderful Wonderful Day” and the dizzying choreography of its barn-raising sequence, is based on the 1954 MGM film.
From October 5 through November 6, meanwhile, you’ll fast-forward to the 1950s with the rocking-and-rolling history lesson of Million Dollar Quartet. A Tony Award-winning musical and the most popular production of the Ogunquit Playhouse’s 2015 season, Million Dollar Quartet takes its inspiration from a legendary jam session between Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash on December 4, 1956. The show celebrates that high-caliber collaboration between these rock-n-roll pioneers with some pitch-perfect renditions of classics like “Hound Dog,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” and “Great Balls of Fire.” Just try to stay in your seat…
(And heads up: The close of the Ogunquit Playhouse’s regular season, isn’t the end of 2016’s regional theater offerings. The Playhouse partners with the Music Hall in nearby Portsmouth, New Hampshire—an easy drive south from Ogunquit—to put on shows for the holiday season. From November 30 through December 18 this year, the Playhouse is presenting Beauty and the Beast, the hit musical based on the Disney film, at Portsmouth’s 138-year-old theater.)
