Fourth of July is fast-approaching: Before you know it, the top-tier fireworks will be blazing up the skies over Ogunquit Beach in the sort of Independence Day spectacular you most definitely want to be a part of.
A hop, skip, and a jump from Ogunquit Beach, the Colonial Inn makes an unbeatable perch for celebrating the holiday in this jewel of a village on the Atlantic shore of Southern Maine. The beachfront pyrotechnics may be the highlight of Fourth of July proceedings, but there’s much else to do with the family during your patriotic getaway with us!
The Marginal Way
Ogunquit Beach is only one face of the town’s seashore. The Marginal Way—just minutes from the Colonial Inn entryway—shows off yet more of our spectacular seascape. This historic paved footpath makes a pedestrian-friendly linkage between Ogunquit Beach and Perkins Cove, and its beauty and atmosphere are such that it’s become one of the most legendary coastal walks in New England.
Young and old alike will fall under the spell of this thoroughfare, which in a bit more than a mile traces shallow cliffs, surf-scoured tidepools, and seaside groves and gardens, with that endless maritime horizon a ravishing backdrop. Nearly 40 benches along the path provide convenient resting places and picnic perches, tuned to the sound of crashing waves and scented by the sea breeze.
You and the rest of the crew can walk the Marginal Way there and back, hop the Ogunquit Trolley for the return trip, or make an on-foot loop via Shore Road. No matter what, a fresh-air family mosey on the Ogunquit seacoast makes one memorable Fourth of July outing—and drives home the truth behind our village’s “Beautiful Place by the Sea” moniker.
Perkins Cove
Whether you reach it by the Marginal Way or not, the old fishing hamlet of Perkins Cove is another excellent destination during your family’s holiday idyll at the Colonial Inn. This is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Ogunquit, and for good reason: There’s an impressive spread of shops, art galleries, cafes, and eateries here, all set against the charming harborside atmosphere. Besides stocking up on books, clothes, and gifts or enjoying a quintessential New England coastal feast, you can take a boat ride out on our local Atlantic waters: sightseeing among harbor seals and lighthouses, even getting a behind-the-scenes look at a venerable regional industry on a lobstering cruise.
Make your Fourth of July reservations at the magnificent Colonial Inn today, and you’ll have a truly unforgettable holiday in store for you and your whole family.
