Well, spring has (finally) sprung, and that means May 21 is right around the calendar. Now, some of you dear Colonial Inn blog readers may be scratching your head and trying to put your finger on the significance of that date. But if you’re among our many Canadian guests, you likely know perfectly well the holiday we’re alluding to: Victoria Day, of course!
Victoria Day roughly marks the birthday of Queen Victoria, the second-longest serving monarch (1837 to 1901) in British history. She was born on May 24, 1819, but since the 1950s Victoria Day has been officially celebrated in Canada on the Monday before the 24th.
So here’s a very big invitation to our Canadian friends to come take your Victoria Day holiday weekend down here in Ogunquit, Maine at the Colonial Inn! We’ll show you our trademark warm-hearted hospitality and supply you with wonderfully maintained accommodations in our grand historic hotel, right in the center of everything.
Victoria Day, Ogunquit-Style
Whether you want to spend it relaxing at the Colonial Inn and lounging on nearby Ogunquit Beach, or you want to fill your holiday with out-and-about sightseeing, shopping, and entertainment, a Victoria Day spent in Ogunquit is a fun and special way to mark this long-observed Canadian holiday.
Arrive at the Colonial Inn on Friday, and you’ll be able to stroll over to the Dunaway Center for “An Evening of Celtic & Folk Music,” a concert put on by Ogunquit Performing Arts that begins at 7:30 PM and features Lisa Schneckenburger, Corey DiMario, and Shannon and Matt Heaton.
The Ogunquit Playhouse, meanwhile, will have just geared up its 2018 season on Victoria Day weekend, which means if you’d like to weave a little live theater into your Southern Maine getaway you’ll be able to take in its first production of the year: Smokey Joe’s Café. It’s a fresh new take on the long-running musical dedicated to the indelible tunes written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, from “Houng Dog” and “Jailhouse Rock” to “Yakety Yak” and “Love Potion #9.”
