Yes, it’s true: Summer’s on the wane. But that only means one of the prettiest seasons in Ogunquit is right around the corner!
Fall’s an amazing time to be touring the coast of southern Maine: the weather’s still lovely, New England’s autumn foliage is rolling through its world-famous palette, and the harvest is in full swing.
When you check in at the Colonial Inn, we’ll greet you with a packet chockfull of our favorite fall activities—perfect for planning your autumnal itinerary, maybe while indulging in the hot apple cider and cookies available in the lobby! In the meantime, we’ll spotlight just a few of the seasonal attractions in store for you in and around Ogunquit.
Woods on Fire
Fall colors don’t get much more exuberant than New England’s, and you’ve got prime options for appreciating the multihued woods right here at the Colonial Inn. While our ocean-view rooms are justifiably popular, you can also request a window overlooking our postcard-perfect town and its fiery street canopy.
Meanwhile, it’s a mere 10-minute drive from the hotel up to Mount Agamenticus, a celebrated vantage and the anchor of a precious sanctuary. The Mount Agamenticus Conservation Region encompasses the biggest swath of pristine coastal forest between Acadia National Park and the Pine Barrens of New Jersey, which makes for a whole lot of colorful autumn birches, oaks, maples, and ashes to eyeball from the summit—or wander through via the extensive trail network.
If you’re hungry for more “leaf-peeping,” take a drive down Shore Road (where we’re perched) to the town of York. While you’re at it, work in a detour out to the vintage Nubble Lighthouse on Cape Neddick: easily one of the prettiest spots in the Ogunquit vicinity!
Apple Picking Time
Fall doesn’t just mean hardwoods in spellbinding shades of golden and orange: It also means apple-picking! A number of u-pick orchards lie within easy reach of Ogunquit, including Spiller Farm and McDougal Orchards. Take a country drive, reap the bounty of laden apple trees, and throw in a hayride or two—what better way to spend an autumn day in southern Maine?
Take in a Show
We’re lucky to have a world-class theater an easy stroll from our Inn: The Ogunquit Playhouse, which has been serving up dramatic and comedic delights since the 1930s. This year’s season has been extended through November: Check out the pioneer farce of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (September 7-October 1) and the rock-n-roll history of Million Dollar Quartet (October 5-November 6)—you get a discount on tickets staying with us!
It doesn’t get much better than Ogunquit in the fall—especially with the Colonial Inn providing your elegant, historic accommodations! Don’t forget to ask us about our special fall promotions, too…
